Campaigners thank Councillors for rejecting Peloton’s plan to develop a massive open storage area in Garston – but fear they could be asked to vote again.

The L19 Action Group thank all the councillors on Liverpool City Planning Committee who voted against the Peloton plan.(1)

This was a significant victory for our campaign and we applaud the seven members who upheld the democratic process by listening to the 1800 plus objections.

At the Planning Committee, which was held on the 22 April 2025, Peloton’s plan to develop a massive open storage area (the size of over six football pitches) on the old Garston Industrial estate was refused.(2)

This was an historic day – for the first time in memory a Planning Committee voted against a proposal recommended by Planning Officers. Committee Members (elected councillors, from Labour, Liberal and Liberal Democrats) listened to and supported the concerned voices of local residents and the L19 Action Group.

Residents told the Council of the misery that increased pollution, of over a 1,000 vehicles a day, that this plan would bring to a residential area. They asked for the building of affordable homes and much needed recreational space on this site.

The elected Councillors who are members of the Committee showed that a democratic process is alive in Liverpool. However unelected Planning Officers – have not accepted this and at the next planning meeting will recommend the same plan again! This meeting is to be held at the Town Hall, 9.45 on Tuesday 13 May.(3)

The L19 Action Group will be at this meeting to support these Councillors in their brave action to uphold democracy and to defend the health and well-being of those that elected them.

Notes

  1. The decision of the Planning Committee was: “That the application be refused, reasons being the type and frequency of traffic associated with the facility, together with the noise and hours of operation associated with the operation of the site which is near to a residential area and the detriment to residential amenity.” (Taken from the minutes of 22 April 2025 Planning Committee)
