Artist Profile - Sue Aigelsreiter

By Colin Serjent

As a fairly recent addition to the art scene, visual artist Sue Aigelsreiter, an Art & Design university graduate, is building on her success as a shortlisted candidate for the John Moores exhibition of contemporary painting in Liverpool in 2004, exhibitions in several private art galleries, invitations to join a number of art publishers' websites, and interest in her work from the New York art world.

She started painting avidly as a child and continued doing this, although as a pastime, while she lived in other parts of the world during a period of 25 years.
During this time abroad she was also working for the United Nations and other international organisations. She also opened and managed her own restaurant, and studied for a university degree in Art & Design History.

A recent series of Sue's paintings is based on images of the beach front near her Liverpool home. Her reasons for choosing the beach are based on her interest in design and the English seaside.

To produce the seaside designs she used to work from, she photographed parts of the beach front on bright sunny days, mainly at unusual angles to portray beach-related objects, such as steps and railings, under the effects of strong sunlight. She subsequently enlarged the photographs which gave the black and white copies a somewhat stark and surreal look.

Sue is currently working on a series of paintings of seascapes which have an old master look painted in a contemporary way, and a series of paintings featuring humorous everyday scenes.
