Slaughterhouse73

By Colin Serjent

The Slaughterhouse73 art gallery recently opened on St Mary's Road in Garston, and forms part of the area becoming a cultural village within Liverpool - a brainchild of artist Alex Corina.
"This gallery is just the start of the Garston cultural village concept - I want to build a network of exhibition and studio spaces," he said.
"My vision of Garston is to create affordable business accommodation for the arts and cultural industries and be a breeding ground for new creative talent," Corina added.
He has received a lot of interest from artists in exhibiting their work at Slaughterhouse, and plans to stage three or four exhibitions there per year.
The name for the gallery derives from the former abattoir, which was based at the back of the venue during the 1940s.
"I want Slaughterhouse to be a place where artists can sell their work. There are not a lot of galleries in Liverpool where artists are able to do so - the city does not have an art buying public," stated Corina.
The first exhibition at Slaughterhouse took place in May, and featured the work of photographer John McDonald in a show titled 'Real People Real Lives', a community based art project organised by Aware Photographic Arts.
