Artist Profile - Deborah Butler

Deborah, born in Lancashire, moved to Liverpool to study at Liverpool Polytechnic (now Liverpool JMU), gaining a BA (Hons) in Textile Design. She then returned to painting, predominantly oil on canvas.

Her work still shows some influence of her background in textiles, in the use of textures and layering of the paint on canvas.

The rugged coastlines of Cornwall and North Wales are a key source of inspiration, giving rise to the 'Coast' series of paintings. Here she uses the layering of paint to create an expression of structure and movement in these dynamic environments.

Liverpool, with its rivers and parks, is a significant feature in her work. Deborah's early paintings dealt either with the structure of the built environment, or expressed the light and space of rivers and parks.

Her more recent paintings in the 'Townscape' series are a study of the diverse interaction between the manmade and the natural.

Deborah currently works and exhibits at her gallery/studio in Liverpool. She is a member of the recently formed 'Liverpool School', which aims to promote abstract geometrical art on an urban theme.
