Back to index of Nerve 18 - Summer 2011 Tranmere Rovers Anti Fascists (TRAF)
Formed only a few months ago in response to an increasing EDL presence at Prenton Park, Tranmere Rovers Anti-Fascists are a non-sectarian cross section of TRFC fans and local community members, concerned at the rise of the extreme right wing. All share the belief that when we stand together we can achieve anything; as a community, as a society, as a class and as a people, and that the rich and ruling class are the only beneficiaries of our class divided. Following a highly successful DJ night late last year, TRAF ran their second social event in Birkenhead on February 26th. Featuring local musicians, performers and the Liverpool Socialist Singers, the night held true to TRAF’s aim of offering the local community a positive alternative to the hatred of the EDL, which can be so appealing to those who feel abandoned by, and alienated from, the wider political and social systems. In keeping with this theme, all funds raised on the night were shared with the Bridges Across Borders charity, with a Birkenhead born representative of BAB presenting a short slide show describing the incredible work being done with young people in a war-affected and ethnically divided region of Bosnia. The successful night ended with an auction which raised over £400 to ensure Bridges Across Borders can continue their important work. TRAF’s work to combat the spread of racist and fascist ideas in the local area has also included a very well received mass leafleting of the ground and joint actions with other anti-fascist groups, and they have produced their own t-shirts, hoodies and other items proudly bearing the TRAF logo: Strength in Unity. The group have ambitious plans, with a possible summer outdoor festival and larger evening events building on their success so far, and welcome all members who support their aims.
