Frank Hendry, Merseyside artist, died in July at the age of 85.

I first met Frank upstairs in Maggie May's Cafe in Bold Street in 2008, where he had an exhibition. I already knew about his paintings, that he had been a mate of Arthur Dooley, and that he was still active on the art scene. I have since learned that he worked as a teacher and a journalist, and that during 1989, £18,000 was raised from prints of his paintings for the Hillsborough Disaster Fund.

Part of the reason I had come to see him was to find out if anything was recorded about his life story. He sat there smiling, and in a modest manner he told me of a book about his wartime escapades. Apart from this though, there was hardly anything written. As with Arthur Dooley, we have surely missed an opportunity here to sew together some of the events of our past with the threads of personal stories.
