Artist Profile - Sarah Cox

Erosion Wave
Emergence

I have grown up with the land - it is ingrained within me and is my inspiration, I appreciate and interpret the subtleties of the natural environment with an increasing desire to draw a tangible part of the landscape into my artwork by incorporating natural resources (namely pigments, dyes and most recently, natural waxes) into the pieces I produce.

I have discovered a story behind every pigment and dye colour, and with the added weight of both history and culture, I feel this contributes another dimension to my artwork. I build a 'bridge' and have a direct correlation from medium to image, and find this a fascinating step to take, and one I wish to continue exploring further within my practice.

Finding a pigment and using it to represent where it came from is an extremely rewarding cycle. Every colour I have laid down tells a story, it has a history, and I know the medium I am using intimately.

Each piece I create holds a snapshot of my life, with its own connecting thoughts and memories - a layer subconsciously hidden.

My latest work involves viewing and exploring natural pigments and dyes using the harshness of polarized light, bringing the patternation and colour of these microscopic images to a wider audience.
