Artist Profile - Aboubaker Abdullah

By Colin Serjent

Aboubaker, who moved to England in 2000, completed a foundation course in art & design and sculpture in Kurdistan, his homeland, in 1992.

He then took a long break from art, before returning to the practice when he came to this country.

Aboubaker studied art & design, completing a foundation course at Liverpool Community Art College, before being awarded a higher foundation certificate in fine art at the same college.

He was involved in three exhibitions at the college, where his sculptures and wood carvings were shown.

Aboubaker also creates paintings - abstracts, portraits and landscapes – and produces photography, particularly images of nature.

He wants to stage a solo exhibition of his work at some time, having earlier taken part in a show ‘Never Again’, which was commissioned by the Holocaust Memorial Campaign in January 2008 at the International Gallery in Liverpool city centre.

Before then Aboubaker participated in an exhibition ’10 x 10’ at the EggSpace Gallery during the 2004 Liverpool Arts Biennial, in which he showed ten copper relief sheets that symbolised the political situation in Kurdistan.

Also in 2004 he worked with an Austrian film maker in a documentary about the plight of asylum seekers throughout the world.

His future plans include producing multi-coloured marble sculptures.
