Ghosts of Resistance - Nerve 11 Editorial

While the official art world has been gearing up for the celebrations, at Nerve we have been burning the midnight oil, collecting stories of activism, resistance and rebellion. We think that a celebration of the 'People's Culture' is in order: the culture that has shaped the city over many years, and won't end with the dawn of 2009. So, this edition of Nerve is mostly given over to this theme. It contains the usual eclectic mix of art, reviews and stories, but guess what? You can hang it on your wall. Then, when the party's over and the last bottle of wine has corked you will be able to refer to the information it contains during your local pub quiz.

The calendar just gives basic information. We know that lots of dates have been missed (and we are sure you will put us straight if we have got any wrong - we insist on this). It is designed to link with our website, where you will find more info on each date, as well as other dates we had no room to include. Talking of room, we want to thank all those who supplied dates, and also a special thanks to those who supplied artwork that we haven't had room for in the magazine.

For the next edition of Nerve we are planning changes to how we work; we want to get more into the 'grassroots'. We want to work closer with community arts groups, sharing experience and skills to promote their work though our pages. As our supporters we need your help to do this. We need more of you to take an active part in the production of Nerve. Please get in touch if you have any time, ideas, or just plain encouragement.

Just as we were going to press we heard that we were unsuccessful in obtaining funding from the 'Arts and Culture Fund'. We weren't asking for a lot, just enough to produce a special issue about migrant workers. The 'Fund' told us that we were, "too political", apparently because we talk about "social justice". Make of this what you will, we are puzzled that an arts and culture magazine, that covers real issues of concern in this city, can be deprived of arts and culture funding in Capital of Culture year.
