Pool of Life: The Story of Liverpool in Caricatures

The writer romps through our 800 years of history using colourful characters who have benefited or been influenced by our city as stepping stones. From King John to Captain Gerrard, 150 caricatures and poignant pen portraits from hundreds that were suggested may cause readers to revise their opinions of several household names; bigots be warned.

The author confesses to being an incomer from London, but clearly he shares our wry humour that verges on impertinence, though his observations are always pertinent, and as incisive as his graphics. Extensive reading has been synthesized and condensed into an engaging style.

The best memento of Europe’s Capital of Culture 2008 any tourist, student or friendly native could wish for. A delight to the eye, thought provoking, utterly endearing.
