Over a seventy-year period, children as young as five-years-old were sent from Britain to Australia, Canada, New Zealand and other parts of the British Empire.

These young and presumably lonely and frightened children were packed off to other sides of the world from workhouses, urban slum dwellings and so-called charitable organisations.

New Lives For Old comprehensively informs us of the often-harrowing plight of the children involved, including contemporary records of those times.

The book covers the people behind the mass migration, the ways that different organisations operated within the system behind it, the centres in various countries that received the children, and most pertinently, the major lifestyle change that the children experienced. Official photographs, letters and records from The National Archive are also included.

On a local level, the book talks about the Liverpool Sheltering Home, who were at the forefront of child migration from the port of Liverpool.

The organisation provided a place of rescue for destitute children, where they would be trained for work and then sent to Canada to begin a new life.

Between 1869 and 1935, over 100,000 children throughout Britain were sent to Canada through the child migration movement.

However, such is the fortitude of a lot of children, many of them managed to adequately adapt to an alien world and settle down in their new surroundings.
