The Zanzibar, Seel Street

By Amanda DeAngeles

Anyone in Liverpool who likes live music goes to The Zanzi. Usually £3-£5 door depending on the line-up, but worth it! Go see for yourself. Amanda DeAngeles chatted to Tony the owner and saw some bands.

How long has the club been running?
Club opened in 1996.

Always same owners? Who?
Proprietor – me, Tony (er, okay Tony, if Cher can get away with not having a surname, I guess you can too).

What's the secret of the club's popularity, in your opinion?
We support local bands, rather than touring bands from other cities.

But you do regularly host touring bands, which is good thing, because our bands make friends with out-of-town bands and get free sofas to kip on when they go touring around. I like the variety of music staged, what's your fave?
Fave - none really; just a well put together song does me fine.

What are most popular noises, tastiest beer, and funniest loo graffiti?
Most pop, indie pop/Red Stripe /’Gary Murphy is fit!!’

Is acoustic club still on Sunday?
No acoustic club at the moment.

What annoys you most while at work?
Most annoying - bands that play every week then moan no-one books them or wants to manage them!!!! Fuckin’ clueless.

Who the fuck is Gary Murphy? (giggle)
He was in The Bandits, one ugly man!!

(The Bandits are no more- they were from Liverpool and Gary Murphy was rhythm guitarist).

Don’t walk behind me, I may not lead. Don’t walk in front of me, I may not follow. Just walk beside me and be my friend.
