Protest at the People's Town Hall

The normal silence of Liverpool’s financial sector after office hours was broken by a crowd of protesters from the local community, Unions and others outside the Town Hall, which had been re-titled ‘Peoples Town Hall’ by virtue of a well placed sticker over the bolted shut front doors.

Lights were on inside the building and police stood ready for something to happen, although the event that required their services never actually occurred as the people mounted a relatively peaceful protest, with only the requisite megaphone enhanced protest chants occurring.

‘If we’re fighting out here then what are you doing Joe Anderson?’

‘No to the Con-Dem cuts!’

‘Save our services!’

These were amongst the calls launched at the in-session Councilmen through the windows as the crowd waved their banners and placards. There were familiar faces in the crowd and some new faces too, as people of all ages set out their disgust at the massive cuts proposed.

Around the corner, two business people walked past the front entrance, possibly on their way to an after work drink, and one of them said ‘What’s all that noise?’ to which his companion said ‘It’s probably another protest…’ as if it happens all the time.

This exchange made me smile, and whatever happens as a result of the meetings going on behind the closed doors, you can guarantee there will almost certainly be more protests.
