Rehearsing for Gathering JackBurjesta Theatre

Burjesta Theatre came into existence in the autumn of 2011, set up by co-founders Julian Bond and Mikyla Durkan, who have both been involved in local theatre for some ten years now. One of its aims is to make theatre accessible to people who would not normally go to the theatre and also to encourage people to get involved who normally wouldn’t consider themselves the type of person who would ‘do’ theatre.

With this in mind we run workshops at the Casa, Hope Street, each Wednesday, from 7pm, these are open to all, £2 per session. The workshops in turn lead to auditions for productions.

Gathering Jack – a Valentine’s Horror Thriller

Gathering Jack is our first production and tells the tale of a fictional serial killer, known as Gathering Jack, who is stalking the streets of Liverpool in 2012. Written by Julian Bond and directed by Mikyla Durkan. Whilst it is not specifically based on any one historical killer, it tips its hat to the ‘gentlemanly Victorian’ killer, bringing the myth up to date. The killer seems infatuated with romance, with a propensity to songs such as ‘my funny valentine’ and ‘I fall in love too easily’ as he slays his way towards a Valentine’s Day finale! As for the killings they take us on a tour of Liverpool landmarks, such as St George’s Hall and the Williamson Tunnels.

The Performances

With this in mind we wanted to have a Valentine Evening with a difference, so for £8 you get the play, a chicken or veggie curry and Liverpool band ‘The Dots’ playing some of Gathering Jack’s favourites...at the Casa on Hope Street, 14th Feb. We also wanted to perform in one of the venues where the killings take place so we are delighted to be performing two nights at the Williamson Tunnels on Friday 2nd and Saturday 3rd of March, where there will be a crime scene and police interviewing members of the audience.
