Protest against Cuts

By Sebastian Gahan 13/11/2010

On a cold, wintry day and night of discontent in many ways, both physical and political, an event of the latter variety took place outside the Town Hall in Liverpool. United in opposition to the savage cuts lined up for the city, a plethora of groups including the Green Party, Socialist Workers Party, Unite, National Union of Teachers, Liverpool Trades Council and many more gathered to pass the message that they were against the cuts and would fight all the way. Speeches were made to agreeing ears, cheers arose from the crowd often and everyone involved put their views across well.

The traffic streamed past, with horns beeping in support of the protesters and people on buses looking out the windows curious as to what was going on. The minimal but wary looking police presence tried their absolute best to keep the people on the pavement with small success. This crowd could only grow bigger and soon people were joining to show their support. We're not talking the average, stereotyped protester here; we're talking the people who make the country work. People in suits, office workers, children, workers and the whole spectrum of generations from young to old.

In contrast with the fifty thousand students protesting in London on the same day, this was a small demonstration of the people's wrath. But in these days of political apathy, lack of interest and general ignorance by many of what the government actually does, it was a fine and worthy show of opposition to moves that will damage the well being of many millions of people city- and nationwide if something is not done to combat them.

Instead of fighting the powerful, I wonder if there is a way of undermining their power by doing someting cooperative ourselves ? My only idea, which is possibly impractical is for the people of Liverpool and our council to buy into a power supplier, and use the profit to fund services ?
