It’s a fact: there are hundreds of open mic nights held across Liverpool throughout the year. If you stroll through this magnificent city, known and recognised by many as one of the most creative and artistic strongholds of Europe, you will be hard pushed not to find the blanket of art, music, theatre and new literature draped over this historic metropolis.

But perhaps few quite like this one: “Rhymes and Records” is new to 2016, an open mic night—yes, but this time not catering to musicians.

Instead, poets and spoken word artists from all over Merseyside are invited to bring their original creations to life on stage at the legendary Jacaranda Records (in the basement) on Slater Street, on the edge of Liverpool’s vibrant Ropewalks area.

This special spoken word event will make its debut on January 13th beginning at 7pm, and will continue monthly, hoping to create a new avenue for grassroots artists to showcase their talents. Admission: free.

Already the event has received a plethora of applications from writers of all styles, and will feature some of the most exciting emerging creatives from the North West, including Bradley Thompson, who will be headlining this month’s event.

Every month, a new up-and-coming artist will be chosen to be top of the bill in an effort to bring to light more underground artists who may not have ever had the chance to headline before.

All performances will be filmed and added to Jacaranda Records YouTube channel—an exciting concept for many who are familiar with the history of the Jacaranda and all the famous voices brought to life there. For any poets with dreams of going viral, it could all begin here!

The idea for the showcase came from one writer, Lyndsay Price, who will be hosting the events. A dedicated Liverpool poet, Lyndsay has found success during 2015 by creating commissioned original poetry on a vintage typewriter for people all over Merseyside and further afield.

Rhymes and Records is her idea to create opportunities for other emerging wordsmiths to really shine. She shares her writing here and you can also see her creations on her Instagram account at @saltwaterpoetry.

Welcoming first timers, as well as seasoned performers, Rhymes and Records’ January theme is ‘new beginnings.’

Keep in touch on Facebook; search “Rhymes and Records”, and Twitter using the hashtag #rhymesandrecords and share your thoughts and inspirations.
