Set in 1982 this is not punk music as I remember it. Then again it is based in Sweden, renowned for its ultra rebellious nature!

Apparently Ingmar Bergmann reckoned Lukas Moodysson was destined to become one of his country's leading directors, but watching this twee story about three 13-year-old schoolgirls attempting to form a punk band you do wonder where he conjured that view from.

Moodysson must have been sorely bereft of creative ideas when he decided to produce this film from a graphic novel by his wife, Coco.

The girls feel alienated from the tedium of school and the boring lifestyles of their parents, so in a form of protest they meet up at a youth club and bash away at musical instruments.

The Fall and Joy Division were given name checks by the girls during the movie, intimating that they were leading punk bands of that era, but in keeping with the inconsequential nature of the movie, the two Manchester based bands could never be regarded as being punk oriented in any shape or form.
