International Women's Day Celebration Event

6th March 2015
St Bride's Church, Liverpool

Reviewed by George Balmer

The evening started with songs by The Liverpool Socialist Singers and was followed by songs and the spoken word from a variety of local talent. The music was excellent: uplifting and empowering to women and men alike. There was some delicious food and the wine was plentiful.

The evening was a celebration of the strength of united women, from local miners' communities and further afield such as South Africa and Latin America. All walks of life were included regardless of faith, ethnicity or lifestyle.

There were songs to support asylum seekers and travellers, stories about women through history who have made a positive contribution to the lives of those around them, and humorous poems about personal experiences like breast feeding and bringing up children.

The venue was comfortable, accommodating some 150 participants. A recognition was made of the interconnectedness of many organisations which provided an opportunity to sign a petition for Amnesty International.

Overall, the event was a great success, and as a 'newcomer' to Socialism and progressive Liverpool movements, I was impressed by the warmth, friendliness and pragmatic openness of everybody I met that evening. My favourite part was 'La Bomba', an awesome women's drum ensemble (the women and the drumming were amazing!).

I would encourage anybody to attend any similar events... you will not be disappointed.

Special thanks to the organisers (LSS), and to Ritchie for the invite.

Thank you to The Liverpool Socialist Singers for asking La Bomba to perform & for this great review! We loved the ethos of the night and we absolutely loved performing. The audience was pretty fantastic, so warm and so welcoming & that gave us such a boost! We welcome newcomers! Two of our women had attended less than 10 workshops & were already at performance level, such is the support from all the others in the band and from our Musical Director Francisco Carrasco. We rehearse every Thursday, 7.30 - 9.30 pm. Please contact me at the above email should you wish to join. Maya Mitter
