Artist Profile - Sue Milburn

Sue Milburn is strongly influenced by the natural world: the sun, sea, cliffs, clouds, beaches and trees; and stresses her emphasis on oil on canvas and sometimes paper on colour, harmony, and textures.

"I believe my method of painting has gradually changed over the years into my own particular style," said Sue, " but I still experiment with the inclusion of different materials, whether man made or of a natural form, into my work.
"I always like to push the way I work a bit further forward, and by doing this, it keeps it interesting for me.
"However I don't particularly like describing my art work - it is difficult to describe something visually in words."

As part of her experimentation, she not only uses conventional paintbrushes to apply paint to a surface, but also uses other implements such as wallpaper scrapers, trowels and various types of knives to do so.

Sue - who is based in Arena Studios - has produced many large canvases, which often incorporate many separate smaller images within their frame, but she is also fond of producing much smaller images in their own right, which are generally very detailed.

Sue owns 25 sketchbooks, full of many diverse and striking images: "In some ways, they are more important to me than my major works."

As well as being an artist, Sue has had experience of curating art exhibitions, including a major Creative LETS show at the Blundell Street Gallery in 2002.

She currently has an exhibition of her work, titled Reflections, which runs until February 29 at the Urban Café in Smithdown Road.
