Artist Profile - Tomo

Tomo (AKA James Thompson) means friend in Japanese. His interests include: colouring-in (mostly in black), dusty old funk records, fresh air, special stews, people, places, kung fu films, bicycles, and lots of other things of all kinds.
The arts community label him a 'graffiti artist' although the graffiti writing population would probably place him much more at the 'artist' end of the spectrum, and (as he feels) not always in a good way. This leaves Tomo lingering somewhere in between, which he is happy with.

Like many people he has a fascination with wilderness and the unknown and he will often seek out derelict or forgotten places.

In his opinion there are too many aspects of our society which are 'over-controlled' but in a few hidden corners of freedom Tomo finds inspiration; untamed wild energy, adventure, untold stories and sometimes he may happen upon some materials too.

What started out as a way of working on a zero budget soon developed into a kind of alchemy and a philosophy of recycling.

Looking beyond the surface of things to see what is really there and following the curiosity that 'thrilled the cat' have led Tomo to care less about being thrilled or killed, and he continues on making some art.
