‘Steam Dwellers’

A New Comic Strip by Matt Hanlon

The soon to be launched ‘Steam Dwellers’ belongs to a subculture fiction genre called Steampunk. The genre incorporates elements of science fiction, fantasy, alternate history, horror and speculative fiction. A staple of Steampunk is taking modern technology and presenting it as Victorians may have seen it. It’s also a world where women are more outgoing and powerful than they would have been in the Victorian era.

This graphic cartoon series is set in 1901, the last year of Victoriana. It embraces a DIY ethic and sometimes anti-establishment messages. Matt Hanlon shows us some of the characters.

Dr. Vincent Marvello is an eccentric inventor and leader of the trio known as the ‘Steam Dwellers.’ When he isn’t running his deceased father’s shop, selling clocks and watches to fund inventions, he’s building everything from automatons to plasma ray guns. Devastated by his father’s murder, he seeks closure and the culprit’s apprehension. Although he’s determined, he can often shy away from situations, especially the object of his affections - the alluring and adventurous Pearl Marsh.

Little is known of Dr. Black-beak. An old school friend of Marvello, Black-beak aims to provide utilitarian devices and services to the general public along with his friend. His fear of harmful residue from coal and fossil fuels causes him to wear a plague doctor’s mask. Unlike Marvello, he prefers direct confrontation and can become increasingly violent when angered.

A renowned archaeologist, Bartholomew Grey was destined to embrace the world and all its opportunities. But the notorious air pirate Captain Fang and his crew left the explorer for dead. Long time followers of his adventures, Marvello and Black-beak developed a pressurised tank that would support Grey’s brain. Grateful for his new existence, he assists the young doctors in their quest to build a united world.

The ‘Steam Dwellers’ is a small independent comic strip filled with mad geniuses, top hats, beautiful women, guns and genetically modified talking octopi. Keep your eyes peeled for the comic strip online at Nerve and in future print editions of Nerve Magazine in shops and other outlets.
