Artist Profile - Emma Gilmour

In my art I use a lot of mixed media especially acrylic, markers and ink. Depending on my subject matter, I either go for a more realistic look or an expressionist approach.

Some of my main influences are Jean-Michel Basquiat, Max Beckmann, Impressionist artists and cartoonists/comic artists.
In photography, I like using film and alternative processing. The cameras I use include Diana F+ and Canon EOS3000 amongst others.
Photographers who have inspired me are Eugene Atget, the Bauhaus photographers, Jack Delano and Charles Moore.

I take inspiration from music, film, politics, history and life around me. I am very politically motivated, particularly in my more Expressionist art which is driven by my reactionary response to the socio-political events that happen in our world.

I run an art company called Beat City Images (www.beat-city-images.co.uk) where I offer an alternative to mass production artwork. I like to make fun, alternative and provocative pieces.

I'm also a member of Red Wire Studios and have done several shows with them. Our most recent was a one night music, art and bad movie extravaganza called Frankenwhore at Wolstenholme Creative Space.
