Artist Profile - Paul Scragg

Paul is a self-taught artist and has been painting and drawing since childhood. He enjoys working in a wide range of media and his art is mostly figurative and focuses around landscapes, buildings and people.

His early paintings focus on landscape subjects, perhaps due to the impressive landscapes of North Wales, where he holidayed as a child, that initially inspired a deeper interest and understanding of the way light and colour determines the mood of a place. The rugged and wild nature of Welsh landscapes attracted him year upon year to explore its character and timeless beauty. He also travelled extensively in Europe usually carrying sketchbook and camera to capture the atmosphere and character of particular destinations.

Paul lives in Liverpool and last September he mounted his first solo exhibition in Liverpool called "River" to celebrate and explore local riverside landscapes. During the last two years he has spent an increasing amount of his spare time on the north coast of Cornwall exploring its remarkable coastline and discovering its unique light and colour. In particular, the power and energy of the sea and skies and the continually changing landscape, which are dramatically influenced by weather conditions and the seasons, provide ever more challenging and exciting subjects.

He works in acrylic, pastel, oils and watercolour and also mixed media. Works are usually in a small to medium size format.
