The Institute for the Art and Practice of Dissent at Home

The Institute for the Art and Practice of Dissent at Home is a home-run initiative, run out of the spare room of a council house in Everton, Liverpool. It is run by a family of two adults and three kids, collectively, twoaddthree (Gary Anderson, Lena Simic, Neal, Gabriel and Sid). The Institute is a self-sufficient and sustainable initiative drawing 10% of all income from its members. The Institute is concerned with dissent, homemade aesthetics, financial transparency as well as critiquing the capitalism of culture embodied in Liverpool08. The Institute is interested in social transformation and has refigured a part of the family living space into a meeting place for artists, activists and cultural dissenters. This activity is undertaken in order to develop and extend dialogues about a 'culture' not necessarily driven by market forces.

We run a series of monthly residencies where artists are invited to submit a proposal for a two or three day project that deploys dissent and critiques the vulture culture of property developers and culture companies. Amongst other things we are committed to providing an alternative space where people can debate and think through what Liverpool08 is really about and how 'culture' is manufactured and consumed today. We are also interested in thinking through (and acting upon!) what Liverpool08's effects are on our city beyond the limitations of the Culture Company's commissioned research project Impacts08. We are reluctant to take sponsorship money from many organisations and try our best to keep control of what happens to the Institute and its members. We feel that there is a strong link between what someone might say about Liverpool08 and who pays them to say it. Any monies earned through the work of the Institute go back into funding other artists' residencies or artistic activities as well as covering costs and labour.

We are hosting a party on the 13th of December to celebrate the end of Liverpool08 Capitalism for Vultures year. This will involve debate and reflection of the year that has past, will showcase some of many residencies that the Institute has hosted and will be an opportunity to think about what form dissent might take for the onset of the monster hangover of Liverpool09.
