The Bulbs + Mugstar
Static Gallery
8pm, Thursday 4th August 2011
This event at Liverpool’s Static Gallery brings together two Liverpool
bands each of which share the capacity to create soundtracks for imaginary
movies of the mind. Coupled with projected visuals and compelling samples
this is sure to be an unforgettable experience.
The Bulbs is both a musical concept and a real band which aims to marry
adventurous music-making with information and sound samples chosen to
challenge the audience to look around them at the world in which they
are living. It aims to ‘switch on listeners like light bulbs’
to question conventional wisdom and corporate media propaganda.
As a virtuoso solo guitarist Neil Campbell regularly performs sets all
over the City, expanding the scope of his already densely textured compositions
with various loops, delays and other electronic effects, making his classical
guitar sound like a multi-timbral guitar orchestra. His various collaborations
and his concept performance pieces such as ‘Ghost Stories: A Night
Opera’ and ‘Frankenstein’ with The Neil Campbell Collective
and Sense of Sound Singers,
have earned him a reputation for musical ambitiousness and innovation.
For The Bulbs he has teamed up with Andy Maslivec, bass player from The
Neil Campbell Collective, and Joey Zeb, session percussionist and drummer
with legendary underground Liverpool dub institution The Zeb. Joey, a
founder member of Zeb, has his roots in prog dub. He has sessioned on
various reggae, rock, folk projects and met Neil during the highly respected
N F I electronic improv sessions. He is currently playing with proggers
The Romans
and dub hop outfit The Corinthians.
Famous for having recorded the last ever Peel Session, Liverpool psych
kraut rock band, Mugstar have released music on Lancashire & Somerset
Records, Trensmat Records, Sea Records and Critical Mass Records and have
toured with Mogwai, Fucked Up, Acid Mothers Temple,Oneida, Clinic, Mike
Watt amongst others. Their 2006 single "My Baby Skull Has Not Yet
Flowered" was hailed in some quarters as a psych classic and featured
in magazines as
diverse as Mix Mag, The Wire, Kerrang and The Times.
The debut album 'Mugstar' was released at the end of 2006 on Sea Records
on CD and on Critical MASS Records on a limited run of heavy weight vinyl
in 2007. The album gained the band fans across the world especially in
America were the vinyl version was changing hands for almost $100. Three
years and countless collaborations later the band signed to Important
Records, who released "...Sun, Broken..." in March 2010. The
band are currently working on a film and have been commissioned to write
a movie soundtrack…
